What to do when you suspect your child has SEN
Do you ever get that gut feeling that something might be a little different about your child? Maybe the school or nursery has raised concerns about your child's development, or perhaps you've been contemplating seeking some support for your child's struggles. Either way, it's totally okay to feel a little overwhelmed. I've been there, and I'm here to share some helpful advice on what steps to take when you suspect your child might have Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Facing concerns head-on
We all love our kids to bits and only want the best for them. So, when we receive feedback about their struggles, it's only natural to feel a bit deflated. Whether it's difficulty in group activities, delayed speech, or trouble making friends, these concerns might hit us hard. It's okay to feel this way, but it's also important to remember that you're not alone in this journey.
Navigating the emotional rollercoaster
When having those "your child might have SEN" conversations, sometimes we feel a bit on the spot and unsure how to respond. It's okay to feel this way. Embracing the emotions, whether it's fear, defensiveness, or being critical of our own parenting, is part of the process. Understanding these emotions can help us take the next steps in a more informed manner.
Reaching out for support
We might feel the urge to handle everything on our own, but it’s essential to remember that we don't need to do it all by ourselves. Seeking support, whether from professionals, school, or other parents who have walked a similar path, can make a world of difference. This support can provide guidance, recommendations, and much-needed emotional backing.
Deciphering professional responses
It's always reassuring to hear words of comfort from friends and family. While their reassurances are well-meant, it’s crucial to keep a level head and not let them deter you from taking proactive steps to address your child's needs. Taking professional advice can help you navigate the way forward with clarity and confidence.
Advocating for your child
Persistency can sometimes be the key to unlocking the support your child needs. Don't be afraid to keep knocking on doors to get what your child needs. Remember, you are your child's most powerful advocate. Every step you take in seeking support, even if faced with resistance, can potentially make a difference in your child's life.
Encouraging progress and celebrating achievements
Amidst the worries, don't forget to jot down the little victories and moments of pride. Keeping a log of your child's struggles, successes, and progress can be immensely helpful in understanding their needs and tracking their development. Celebrating these small victories is just as important as addressing their challenges.
Embracing early intervention
Remember, it's never too early to support your child's development, and taking action sooner can be incredibly beneficial. Implementing small, consistent strategies can make a positive impact on your child's progress and overall confidence.
As overwhelming as it may feel, navigating a child's journey with SEN can also be incredibly rewarding. Recognising and addressing their needs early on, persistently seeking support, and celebrating their achievements every step of the way can make a substantial difference in their development.
Remember, you are never alone on this journey, and seeking out support can provide you with the insight, guidance, and emotional strength you need to better understand and cater to your child's unique needs. You can listen to the episode here.
